Traffic Study of the Bonn Local Area

Initial Situation

The State Road Authority of North Rhine-Westphalia (Straßenbau NRW), Bonn Project Group, plans extensive expansion and renovation works on the motorways and within the city of Bonn in the coming years, including on the Rhine bridges. Due to the restructuring of road authorities and the establishment of the Autobahn GmbH, the project is now being continued under the Autobahn GmbH.

Given the already tense traffic situation on both the motorways and the subordinate classified road network in Bonn, this represents a particular challenge. Unlike, for example, the Cologne motorway ring, the motorway and federal road network of the former capital does not provide sufficient diversion or alternative routes. The so-called “Bonner Zange” (Bonn Pincer) can only be bypassed via long detours or through the subordinate road network.

The entire road network in and around Bonn is already heavily congested and has very limited capacity to compensate for traffic disruptions. Even minor accidents or short-term measures can bring traffic in the entire city center to a standstill.

Task Definition

In order to assess the traffic interactions of individual measures, provide an evaluation of the overall traffic situation in the Bonn local area for the coming years, and, if necessary, identify optimization potential in construction traffic management, a comprehensive traffic study of the city of Bonn and the adjacent motorways is required. The traffic study for the Bonn local area is divided into a traffic model for construction site coordination and temporary traffic management (A) and a traffic study for the B56n expansion project (B).

Approach

  • Definition of the study and planning area
  • Inventory assessment and traffic surveys
  • Development of a DTVw5 traffic model for morning and afternoon peak hours
  • Calibration of the model using 100 intersection and cross-section counts
  • Construction site assessments (A)
  • Capacity calculations at construction sites
  • Preparation of load plots
  • Creation of a forecast model (A) for construction projects
  • Quantification of traffic shifts for 15 construction site scenarios, each with 3 sub-variants (different traffic management options)
  • Preparation of HBS capacity verifications for intersections
  • Microsimulation of a connected network for morning and afternoon peak hours
  • Traffic Study B56n
  • Preparation of a 2030 forecast reference case
  • Calculation of the 2030 forecast planning scenario
  • Determination of traffic impacts

Results

  • Construction Site Assessment (A)
  • Preparation of construction site dossiers for various planning scenarios
  • Evaluation of the combination of construction measures in terms of their impacts on the traffic network
  • Traffic Study B56n
  • Report and documentation on the planned expansion of the B56n
