Cable car system for Duisburg
Initial Situation
The city of Duisburg and GEBAG Flächenentwicklungsgesellschaft mbH are planning several urban development projects. As part of the planning for Duisburg’s mobility concept, the development areas “Duisburger Dünen,” “Technologie-Quartier Wedau,” and “6-Seen-Wedau” are to be sustainably connected and accessed. In this context, the question arose as to whether access via an urban cable car is feasible and sensible.
Within the framework of a concept study by PTV Transport Consult GmbH, a potential route for an urban cable car line across the considered Duisburg development areas was identified, which is technically feasible from a cable car perspective.
Furthermore, the comparison of the estimated passenger potential with the projected investment costs indicated that such an investment project could be economically viable.
Task
GEBAG Flächenentwicklungsgesellschaft mbH therefore commissioned PTV Transport Consult GmbH to carry out a cost-benefit analysis, based on the procedural guidelines of the Standardized Evaluation of Transport Infrastructure Investments in Public Transport, version 2016+. Building on the results of this cost-benefit analysis, a Standardized Evaluation involving funding authorities can be prepared at a later stage.
Approach
The study is conducted according to the standard procedure of the currently valid version (“Version 2016+”) of the Standardized Evaluation methodology.
In addition to the mandatory sub-indicators, the optional sub-indicators “Functionality of transport systems / land use” and “Public services / spatial planning aspects” are evaluated using utility analysis. Furthermore, the optional model component “Consideration of P+R facilities” is incorporated into the study in a sensitivity analysis.
The processing of the relevant public transport (PT) and motorized individual transport (MIT) services for the entire study area in the traffic model, the forecasts from the current state to the without-scenario and with-scenario, as well as the assignment of demand matrices, are carried out using PTV Visum software from PTV GmbH.
Results
The results of the study are expected to be available in spring 2025.
